How to Clean Your Dog’s Ears at Home

How to Clean Your Dog’s Ears at Home: Step-by-Step Guide from My Best Friend Vet

Keeping your dog’s ears clean is one of the easiest ways to prevent painful ear infections and keep your pet healthy. At My Best Friend Vet in Olivette, our veterinary team frequently treats dogs with ear problems caused by allergies, moisture, or excess wax buildup.

With proper cleaning at home,  using the right veterinary-approved products and gentle technique, you can help protect your pet’s ears between professional checkups.

Important Note: The technique demonstrated in this guide is performed by licensed veterinary professionals. If you’re uncomfortable with any step, or if your dog shows signs of pain or distress, stop immediately and schedule an appointment with our team. We’re happy to demonstrate the technique in person or perform professional cleanings. If your dog shows signs of infection, an in-person examination is necessary for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Why Regular Ear Cleaning Matters

Small amounts of wax, yeast, and bacteria occur naturally in the ears. However, when there is an excessive amount of wax buildup in the ear canal, it traps moisture and creates a perfect environment for overgrowth of bacteria and yeast– leading to infection and inflammation. Cleaning your dog’s ears regularly at home removes the waxy buildup, and keeps the bacterial and yeast colonies at a minimum.

If your pet’s ears are extremely red, inflamed, or painful, contact My Best Friend Vet. Those symptoms may indicate that an infection is already present, and additional prescription medications are needed.

What You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather:

  • Cotton balls
  • Q-tips
  • Veterinary ear cleaner

Veterinary ear cleaner is available at our office. Contact us and our team can recommend an ear cleaner safe for your dog’s skin and tailored to allergy or skin concerns.

Cleaning the Ears

  • Soak a cotton ball with ear cleaner.

  • Place it in your dog’s ear canal and gently push it down into the canal. The unique L-shaped structure of a dog’s ear canal makes it safe to insert cotton balls deeper than you might expect – the eardrum is protected by the horizontal canal. For larger dogs, the cotton ball may go completely into the canal. This should feel gentle and not require force.

  • Massage the base of the ear for 10–15 seconds. You’ll hear a gentle squish as the cleaner and cotton ball agitate the debris deep in the canal.

  • Remove the wet cotton ball (you may need to gently fish it out with your fingers or tweezers if it went deep) and follow with a dry cotton ball to absorb moisture and debris.

  • Use a Q-tip to clean the visible outer folds and creases inside the ear. As demonstrated in our video, you can carefully use Q-tips in the visible portions of the canal to remove debris. Due to the canal’s shape, the eardrum is naturally protected and cannot be reached with a Q-tip when cleaning straight down.

  • Alternate wet cotton balls, dry cotton balls, and Q-tips until everything comes out clean.

  • Finish with a few dry cotton balls to ensure the ear canal is dry.

Pro-Tip: Let your dog shake their head between cotton balls. It helps pull debris from deep in the ear closer to the surface, making it easier to scoop out.

Applying Prescription Ear Medication

If your veterinarian has prescribed ear medication:

  1. Insert the applicator tip into the ear canal. Go as deep as the nozzle of the bottle allows.
  2. Apply a generous squeeze.
  3. Massage the ear base to coat the canal.

This ensures the treatment reaches both the vertical and horizontal ear canals, targeting the full area of infection.

Understanding Your Dog’s Ear Canal

A dog’s ear canal is “L” shaped, with two sections — vertical and horizontal — leading to the eardrum. Because of this structure, excess moisture can become trapped by the 90 degree turn, leading to overgrowth of yeast or bacteria in the canal.

Some breeds, like Doodles, also have fur that grows in the canal, forming mats that further trap wax and moisture. These mats need to be pulled out before ear medications are applied.
